John Rocha Biography

John Rocha PortraitBorn in Hong Kong of Chinese and Portuguese descent, John Rocha moved to London in the 1970’s to study fashion. Using Irish Linen in his graduate collection he was inspired to visit Ireland, eventually moving to Dublin in the 1980’s, where he has lived for over twenty years, working closely with his wife and business partner, Odette. Over this time, John has developed and refined his own distinctive style, constantly experimenting with new fabric and techniques. His trademark hand embellishments, handcrafted knitwear and hand painted silks give a distinctly special and eclectic appeal to his collections.
John was awarded with the prestigious title of British Designer of the Year in 1994 and since then has received widespread international recognition, and has expanded his work into other creative fields.

In 1997, the John Rocha at Waterford Crystal collection was successfully launched marking his first work in another medium. The range has subsequently achieved worldwide acclaim, and continues to expand and develop. October 2004 saw the launch of Black Cut a dramatic new collection of opulent Black and Clear Cut stem and gift ware.

Opened in May 1999, the Morrison Hotel in Dublin was John Rocha’s first interior design project and is now firmly established as one of Europe’s most popular hotels. Following this success John has worked on numerous prestigious interior projects. Including L3, a development of apartments and penthouses in a 1930’s postal depot in Liverpool City Centre and Beacon Court a business and lifestyle centre in Dublin. He is currently involved in the design of a major urban residential project in Birmingham City Centre, which successfully launched off plan in 2003 and is due for completion this year. He is also working on an exclusive development of luxury apartments in Budapest together with several private schemes.

Autumn-Winter 2000 saw the launch of Rocha.JohnRocha, five exclusive ranges for Debenhams comprising of Menswear, Womenswear, Childrenswear, Accessories and Homes. The Rocha.JohnRocha, collections have gone from strength to strength and continue to evolve and develop season by season.
In February 2002, in recognition of his long-standing contribution to the fashion industry, John Rocha received the Commander of the British Empire (CBE) award from Her Majesty The Queen.

In the summer of 2002, John Rocha’s contemporary range of jewelry was launched in Dublin. The beautiful collection of organic designs in gold, silver and semi-precious stones was launched in the UK in the Autumn 2002 and is stocked at Liberty, London and selected retailers throughout the UK and Ireland. In Autumn 2004 two new ranges were added to the JRJ collection and have proved immediate successes.

In October 2002, John launched a new book entitled: JOHN ROCHA, Texture, Form, Purity, Detail, a superbly illustrated study of his design philosophy and influences, published by Conran Octopus. It serves as a comprehensive record of John’s work through fashion, product, interiors, and architecture.
John Rocha continues to expand and develop his portfolio of work and to explore ever new areas of creativity and design.

John Rocha Introduces Eclectic Range of Contemporary Jewellery

Simply called John Rocha Jewellery, the collection is an inspired mix of organic shapes and forms - which includes clean simple pieces that can be worn everyday and more dramatic statement fashion pieces.

The collection is a balance of contemporary design and naturally high quality and is intended as much for personal purchase as gifting.

There are approximately 60 pieces in the first collection comprising six ranges - CROSS, FISSURE, ORGANIC, PEBBLE, PEAK AND BEADS. Three additional collections comprising of 50 pieces were introduced in 2004 – LEAF, CIRC and HEARTS. New for 2005 is the ORIEL collection which contains 16 pieces. All pieces are made from sterling silver, 18ct gold, precious stones to include diamonds and citrine.

John Rocha said "The inspiration behind this new range has come from many different sources but as with all my work, my aim has been to create something unique and beautiful. The collection reflects my love of craft and tradition with a number of pieces having a distinctly handmade feel.

"I have designed the collection to compliment my contemporary style, but I think all of the pieces have a classic beauty and sensual appeal. The shapes and forms are essentially simple and uncomplicated allowing the wearer to create their own individual statements in how they wear them.

"I am very excited about this collection - I really enjoy the opportunity to work in new mediums and to learn about the character of the materials. I hope I have achieved the balance between texture, form and detail that I look for in all my work.

Hi Ken, Firstly let me say Happy St Patricks Day for tomorrow and secondly let me say go raibh maith agat for the gorgeous watches, they were most welcome and made my day,I really miss Dublin and Ireland and just having this watch to look at makes me very happy,I rang everyone to tell them about them,my fathers birthday is coming up in April now as well and I will give the mens one to him,I am very proud to be Irish and although at the moment cant afford to buy a house in Dublin at least I can show where I come from without opening my mouth just by extending my hand, thank you once again, fingers crossed for the $5000 prize, then I can go on a spending spree for my three children who are equally proud of their Irish heritage. Thanks again from the bottom of my heart. Slan Sharon.

Dear Ken~ I wanted to thank you for the beautiful claddagh watches that I won in your February Sweepstakes! My husband and I are really enjoying them. I was amazed at how quickly you shipped them after I received the notice that I had won! They arrived all the way in Los Angeles in only two days!! We are making plans to snap some good pictures for you around L.A. in the All Claddagh t-shirt you sent! Thank you again and I hope you had a wonderful St. Patrick's Day! Not a query, just a statement on how much I enjoy looking at your site and the webcam, i recently won two watches and was so pleased,I am a member of ****** competition website and I have put down the details of your website and competition and the fact that I won so this should increase the hits to your website dramatically. Thanks again for the watches, Sharon

I was lucky enough to be the winner of the two Claddagh watches a short time ago and have been very remiss in contacting you. My late grand-mother is probably spinning in her grave as she always taught me that for any gift received one should reply within 24 hours in writing to the sender, thanking them. Hopefully she will accept my E-mailing you instead of a letter. I gave the mens watch to my father who is absolutely thrilled with it as he is very proud of his Irish ancestry. He now sticks his wrist under the nose of everyone he meets and lectures them on the claddagh !! My wife received the ladies watch and true to female romanticism was most impressed with the explanation of the meaning of the claddagh which she was not aware of. I must make mention of my suprise at the speed with which you reacted once the winner was drawn. The package was received here in South Africa very, very quickly and was certainly the fastest response I have had to despatch of any item I have ever ordered over the Internet. Keep up the good work

It is only seven days since I received your 'congratulations' email and already today , your wonderful Claddagh watches arrived from all the way across the world to me here in New Zealand. What a lovely surprise to come home to at 8.30 tonight after an out of town conference. That's what I call real efficiency. I am absolutely thrilled. Since, winning, I have drooled over your website at the beautiful Claddagh pieces you have available and have told 'everyone' about them. I hope that you will get many more visitors from this part of the world to your site and that they too, all become as enchanted with your jewellery as I am.

Yvette Shore, New Zealand - (Dec 14 2004)
(Post her annual Runner-Up Prize) A few moments ago the courier arrived at my door with a parcel from Ireland. This took just six days to arrive from across the world to New Zealand. Inside was the beautiful Gold Puffed Heart Extra Heavy Claddagh ring that you so generously awarded me as runner up in your competition. It fits perfectly and I can't believe how incredibly flattering it is on the hand. The website image just doesn't do it justice. The gold is a beautiful rich warm colour; and the ring looks and feels solid and luxurious. Although it could never be called 'flashy', it is the sort of ring that you would see someone wearing and ask about - it looks like it has a story behind it. Better still is the way it looks and makes your whole hand look when you wear it. It is a wonderfully flattering - the sort of ring you want to wear all the time. I am thrilled and thoroughly recommend the Claddagh ring to anybody , anywhere in the world, visiting your website who wants something really special either for themselves, or as a gift It is obvious why it is considered the perfect token of love or friendship. Thank you so much! I shall treasure it.

I was the very lucky winner of the Sept02 draw, and I was so thrilled when the watches arrived. I gave the mans' watch to my Mum.....why? because as it has a larger face, it was easier for her to read....thank you so much you are gems yourself!

Tom Shoeck, Feb 2004 - (Dec 14 2004)
Hi, Ken I received the two watches on Tuesday, and they're great! Many thanks! Tom Schoeck

Tom Walsh, USA - (Dec 14 2004)
I just wanted to thank you for the two wonderful Claddagh watches. They arrived yesterday and they are beautiful. I gave one to my wife and the other to my teenage son. Both of them are absolutely thrilled and are now proudly wearing them to work and school, respectively. Your contest was a terrific idea and a lot of fun. Thank you so much for having it.
